Baptism is one of two sacraments celebrated by United Methodists. At Metropolitan, we are eager and happy to welcome you and your child into our community of faith and love. Parents wishing to have their children baptized must be serious about becoming members of our congregation. Families are encouraged to attend worship services regularly before requesting a baptism to make sure that Metropolitan is a good fit for their families.
Parents’ next step is to contact the Director of Children’s Ministries, who will discuss the baptism and find a mutually agreeable Sunday morning in which the baptism can be performed. To facilitate the process, please complete our online baptism request form or download the pdf form and mail into the church office (3401 Nebraska Ave. NW, Washington, D.C.).
Next the parents will meet with the pastor conducting the baptism to discuss its meaning and implications, and to continue to attend worship services at Metropolitan. This meeting is held after the date for the baptism is set, but before it occurs.
The morning of the baptism, families may reserve seats for extended family members and friends. Photographs may be taken during the ceremony if no flash is used. Photographs may also be taken before and after the worship service in the sanctuary. Members of the congregation and invited to greet and congratulate the family after the worship service either during the coffee hour or after the worship service.
Other questions regarding baptism for children at Metropolitan may be directed to Janet Craswell.
If you are an adult who would like to baptized, who has not been previously baptized, please contact Rev. Dr. Charles Parker.
