Serving Ministries

Grate patrol

National UMC supports the Salvation Army Grate Patrol which delivers food to the hungry across the District of Columbia every night. We welcome volunteers for this vital ministry. We make sandwiches and pack lunches on the fourth or fifth Sunday of the month, in the Wesley Fellowship Hall after the worship service and in the Metropolitan Vestry between services. The next day, volunteers load up the Grate Patrol van and deliver food and water to those in need. Volunteers between the ages of 13 to 17 years old must volunteer with a parent. Grate Patrol Sundays in 2024 are on the last Sunday of the month.

Food Ministry at National UMC - Helping our neighbors in DC.

There are a number of food recovery and food delivery opportunities with our food ministry called Campus Kitchen DC. We need volunteers to pick up bread, cookies, and baked goods from Levain Bakery in Georgetown Fridays. There are also opportunities to assist the twice-a-month food pantry at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chevy Chase DC and the weekly Water Ministry at St. Columba's Episcopal Church. Other opportunities are added frequently so check our sign up for new tasks. Please click HERE.

Grocery Bag Project/Food Donations

You can help fight hunger in DC by purchasing items for our very own Campus Kitchen Food Ministry's wishlist Grocery Bag Project. Campus Kitchen's Chef Anthony will use items you donate to prepare home cooked meals for DC families in need or place them in grocery bags to be distributed to those facing food insecurity. When ordering on Amazon, select Campus Kitchen Food Drive for the shipping address.
