Safe Sanctuaries Training

Welcome to the Safe Sanctuaries training hub for National United Methodist Church (NUMC). National UMC is a local congregation in Washington DC. If you are looking for Safe Sanctuaries guidance from the United Methodist denominational offices, please go to https://www.umcdiscipleship.org/equipping-leaders/safe-sanctuaries. National UMC is happy to share our training materials with other congregations, but we cannot offer certification of completion for individuals outside of our congregation.

In order to be certified to work with children and youth at National UMC or our associated ministries, you must complete the following:

  • Read our Safe Sanctuaries Policies (NUMC USE ONLY) (Following the link will let you read the policies. You'll also be able to fill out a form confirming you have read the policies)

  • Watch each of the three videos below

  • If you will be working with children or youth at National UMC in Washington DC, please complete the background check form on the portal ( NUMC Background Check Portal ).

    PLEASE do not fill out a background check form unless you meet one of these criteria:

      • you will be working with the NUMC Sunday School

      • you will be working with NUMC student ministries (middle school or high school)

      • you are part of an NUMC musical group that includes children or youth

      • you will be working with NUMC VBS

      • you will be part of the NUMC team working with children at Project Transformation

      • you are a member of the NUMC Trustees

      • you are a paid NUMC staff member

    If you do not meet one of these criteria but believe you need to have a background check, please email safesanctuaries@nationalchurch.org before proceeding

  • Sign the statement at the bottom of the page indicating that you have read the policy, watched the videos, and submitted your background check.
