Jazz@Wesley Presents Nom

6:30-8:30 pm

Come experience an impressive new talent on the DC jazz scene, Nom. He’s bringing his drums and his skilled band to Jazz@Wesley in February. A student of UDC’s esteemed jazz program, Nom’s musical prowess is intuitive, energetic, and utterly engaging.

Nom’s name comes from his full name, Ynomrah Hicks (pronounced E-nahm-rah), aka, Nom. According to family lore, Nom taught himself to play drums at the age of one.

Born in Washington, DC, and raised in Maryland, Nom comes from a musical family. As a child, Nom and his sister Anaya would visit their father's jazz band rehearsals on U Street. Nom was always bugging his father to let him join in. One day when he was five, the drummer left the rehearsal room for a short break, and Nom rushed to the drum set. He was so small he had to perform standing up, but he insisted on playing with the band. On hearing him, the band members, including his father, were shocked. They were awed by his skill and ability to play alongside them. They immediately knew that he had a tremendous gift, and they urged him to continue developing his talent. And he did just that.

By the time he was 14, Nom had learned to play both the cello and piano, while continuing to improve on the drums. He taught himself to rap, produce music, and write songs. He later attended the prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC, where he came under the tutelage of legendary jazz educator Davey Yarborough. He currently attends the University of the District of Columbia’s Music program and studies with Allyn Johnson and Dre King. He is also part of the UDC Big Band. These programs have enabled him to perform at many prestigious venues, including The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and Howard University.

Nom is determined to bring new sounds to the world while staying true to himself and the culture he was brought up on. He aims to amaze his audience with what he brings to the table while building a worldwide community.

Drummer, artist, producer, songwriter…. This young man is developing all his gifts. Join us to enjoy DC’s latest homegrown jazz sensation. You can say you saw him before he got big!
