Our Service Ministry Partners

National UMC multiplies the impact of its service and community outreach through long-standing partnerships with other churches, faith institutions, church-related agencies, and nonprofit service providers. National UMC helped to launch some of these community ministries, such as the Washington Interfaith Network and Friendship Place, and provides critical inputs to each in the form of financial or fundraising support, in-kind donations, and volunteer resources.

American University Methodist Community

National UMC has supported United Methodist Campus Ministries at American University since 2008.  AU students, faculty, staff, and alumni have enriched our congregation in countless ways, whether they are in town for one semester or eight (or more!). NUMC is a Community Partner of the Kay Spiritual Life Center at American University and Rev. Dr. Rachel B. Livingston is a pastoral resource for AU students.

Angel Tree Program (Salvation Army)

National UMC, together with our Metropolitan Nursery School, participates in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program each Christmas season. Individuals or groups sponsors a child, or “Angel,” and purchase new toys, clothing, books or shoes for that child from their personal holiday wish list.  Angel Tree is a simple and very direct way to assist children and their families during the Christmas season. If you would like to sponsor a child or need other information, please contact Marsha Mathews. marsha.t.matthews@gmail.com.

Asylum Works

AsylumWorks empowers asylum seekers, asylees, and refugees to thrive in their new communities. NUMC members help in meeting basic needs, offering hospitality, and accompaniment to these vulnerable newcomers in our community. For more information, please contact Caralee Adams , adams.caralee@gmail.com

Baltimore Washington Reconciling Ministries Network (BWARM)

This consortium of reconciling United Methodist congregations in the Baltimore-Washington Conference empowers people and churches to include, affirm and celebrate God’s children of all sexual orientations and gender identities in the life, ministry and leadership structures of the church and beyond. BWARM shares information and resources and prepares for church participation in Pride parades throughout the conference.  The group meets on select Saturday mornings for worship and sharing. Meetings are open to all interested parties.  For more information, please contact Kerm Towler,  flautobasso@yahoo.com.

Friendship Place

Friendship Place was established in 1991 by concerned neighbors and congregations, including National UMC, to address the needs of homeless individuals in Upper Northwest DC. Over the years, Friendship Place has grown to be the premier housing service provider in the DC region, with innovative, person-focused programs that empower participants to rebuild their lives, find homes, get jobs, and reconnect with friends, family, and the community. Grate Patrol (Salvation Army)

For more than 20 years, the Salvation Army Grate Patrol has been delivering an evening meal 365 days a year in downtown Washington to people in need. NUMC joins 24 other faith, business and civic groups, to partner with The Salvation Army, providing bag lunches and hot meals, as well as volunteers to ride the van and serve the meals on the fourth Monday of each month. Volunteers can sign up for a one-time commitment any given month. Sandwich making is done on Sunday mornings the day before our monthly van run.
